Thesis:
Spiritual Care in the Hospital Setting
Marilyn Louise Buehler, 2007
Abstract
A workshop “The Art of Spiritual Assessment” developed for chaplain residents enrolled in Clinical Pastoral Education explored approaches to spiritual assessment and how to develop a spiritual care plan, identify outcomes and communicate the findings to the medical team. The workshop consisted of lecture and group discussion. The curriculum consisted of the following topics: the need for spiritual assessment, spiritual assessment and charting methodologies, and assessing spiritual needs of children. Participants’ response to the workshop evaluation indicated a greater understanding of the need for spiritual assessment and charting in the patient medical record. Participants expressed the information was valuable and could be applied to their ministry. The handouts provided a practical resource for future reference, guidelines for inquiry into the patient’s spiritual life, and methods to chart findings in the patient’s record.
